The scale quantizes: progress advances a whole mark at a time, so the bar steps rather than glides. That step is the design telling the truth about its own resolution. A swept bar would imply a precision the reading does not have.

The readings stay separate because they were separate. A line drawn through them would invent values between the samples that were never measured.
